That's right, the Sons of Corax are my next gaming project. Masters of stealth, assasination and sabotage. They are freaking 30K Ninjas! (thus the black).
And now Games Whorkshop is having events like the Horus Heresy Weekender and the Horus Heresy Gaming Weekend to total ensnare us (and make middle aged guys with too much disposable income like myself fly from LA to London TWICE in one year).
Now I have to say, when I read "A Thousand Sons" I immediately said "FAVORITE LEGION." Brilliant back story, tragic fall, amazing powers (not sure how any legion could best them when they were at their height of power). And I will do a Thousand Sons army when they come out. (Can't wait to see the Scarab Occult models).
But my Crimson Templars, my 30,000 point Apocalypse army, is dark red. So I need something else. And I am a loyalist. To hell with the Dark Powers.
So let's see.
Ultramarines - Yes, cooler after Abnett's "Know No Fear". But still smurfs.
Space Wolves - Though I was one of the few who liked "Prospero Burns", I HATE Space Vikings. Hate them even more for their broken codex and all the "Counts As" armies that really piss me off.
Imperial Fists - Thought long and hard about them as I am coming to like the yellow armor. But ultimately, kind of boring - "We build tough defenses".
Iron Hands - Seriously? The guys who got their ass kicked and whose Primarch gets his head cut off? OK, I do like the who metal over flesh thing, but no.
Salamanders - Never got into them, but the only Marines with dark skin and red eyes are very cool. Love their humansitic spirit. But they don't fire me up (sought to speak) in battle.
White Scars - Like their lightning strike philosophy. Love the bikes. Not now, but I could see doing them. White isn't a color I care to paint though.
Blood Angels - Already have a BA army. Small, but playable. .
Dark Angels - Have a Dark Angels army. Hate the Lion. What a prick. But maybe a force with Astellan in charge.... I could just add him to my current Angels.
I think what finally put me over the top for Raven Guard was "Angel Exterminatus". In that book we meet a Raven Guard named Nykona Sharrowkyn, a Space Marine who bests Lucius not once but twice in close combat. OK, this guy is a bad ass and I need to model him. Space Ninjas! I am in!
Plus, when Dave Taylor (a great gent and friend) heard I was doing the Raven Guard, he volunteered to do a Corax model for me! Who am I to say no?
So there you have it. I hope to have my 3,000 points done by August's event. Expect LOTS of jump packs. A Spartan, because it is such a cool model, and more.
Loken (maybe I change my handle to Sharrowkyn)

Raven Guard probably has the longest list of notable marines ever, that'd be cool to see.
Nice though, that sounds like a fun project to do, can't wait to see it all!
I agree whole-heartedly with the hatred of Space Wolves. I've never been turned on by the Thousand Sons, and I don't see many of the other founding Legions naturally attractive. But I'm an Ultramarine guy (despite my many forays into everything else), and I can't wait to see what they're represented as in the HH stuff. The novels made them great (Know No Fear was my favorite so far, with the short story with the Ultramarines systematically wiping out the World Eaters being my second), but they've never been easy to capture in the game. They're just... really smart? I'm geeked.
Although I do have to admit that I've been kind of a fan of the Dark Angels, and I can't wait to see the quality of the Lion when he's released. Plus, it's then justifiable to field 'Fallen' Dark Angels and claim they're not Chaos (yet). Hmmmm...
Well, thanks for the flattering description of wolves)
They're not Vikings, more precisely, not only the Vikings, there are more Celtic influence and just the archetype of the barbarians, but rather Conans in space.
As person who plays them for over 10 years, and I originally did the pre-heresy army, in those days it was hard, too, i also not like all these "Counts As" armies.
But the real wolves is cool. ^_^
As for the fists, it's a stereotype that books of heresy weaken, and that's good. They are just as good in the assault, as in the siege. This is clearly seen during the battle with the iron warriors after Istvaan 5.
As for the white scars, they are great rogues, mad berserkers and completely unguided than wolves, it is perfectly illustrated in the story of Khan.
Ravens are damn good, recent books worth reading about them.
Blood Ravens is not as clear, there is Amit and his company, berserkers and cannibals who can not deal with your anger.
But the iron hands, the real heroes, they were able to pull together and continue to fight, losing Primarch is the really persistent and strong guys. Even their opponents respect them. Perturabo trolls Fulgrim in recent books that his army well have damaged by Ferrus children.
They have an internal drama and constant throwing from hatre of the flesh to loyalty to humanity.
Salamanders on the books until the very humane, renaissance people .
Hate Space Wolves all you want, Russ kills Primarchs. Barbarians for the win. Drinking, hunting, and weapon play for the win. As a retired US Army Ranger, there is no other army I would even think a glancing moment at other than the wolves. That is all.
Wait even more...who had a codex even before Angels of Death...Raven guard was but an afterthought...oh, I'm sorry, Space Wolves...lol. It's all good, choose your army, but after I came back from Gothic Serpeant there was only 1 obvious choice...bark at the moon. :)
SW hate ? yeah sounds Someone is JELLY XD
also very non bias comments on all the legions of course , not fan boy mode at all .
SW Broken codex my ass, strong and can stand after the test of time SURE , but so is all of Kellys books (looks at old eldar ......i still lose to them using SW kid you not, does that make Eldar Broken too ? lol)
agemmanjw - Agree, the Ultramarines did well under Dan Abnett and he made them cool finally. That was a great book.
Max - I joke about the Space Wolves (despite hating them) and love your "Conan in Space" analogy.
And EXCELLENT points on Iron hands and Salamanders. I like the Salamanders as the "renaissance Mrines". HA HA
Alec
Seems like a lot of Russians posting comments. :-) Max, did you get your buddies to all post?
HA HA
And yes, the article is written to be fun and pokes fun at Legions. The beauty of the game is that we have 18 VERY different legions that have something for everyone.
Yes, it looks like the expansion of russians in net)) haha
We are planning two games this summer: space wolves against thousands sons, renegades and loyal legions against the xenos. My feeling is the balance in the Apoc pretty interesting changes in heresy.
Under the renaissance man I had in mind the humanistic idea of Prosperian credo.
what is your beef with the lion, he is awesome.
Overgrown paranoid Mowgli and one of the best swordsmen and strategists, who could not understand and communicate with ordinary people by his soldiers. Yeash he is awesome)
@agemmanjw-- a friend and I are tweaking the current Dark Angels codex to play as Fallen which aren't necessarily Chaos (tho they can be used as such if Cypher is taken). It's so gutted as to resemble more of a Chapter Approved list as all the Ravenwing have been taken out, but we're working out which Heresey list entries to bring in to have more options.
Black armored Deathwing? Yes please!
