The Big Game III Spokane: A Big Writeup

Well, a couple months on and the dust has long since settled. The Big Game III was a major success and everyone involved had a blast. Being relatively new to Apocalypse despite a 5 year tenure in 40k, I made the decision to get some help running the game. Now, to say help run the game is a bit of an over statement of my duties. I helped to set up and organize the event, but with the little to no experience I had, I didn't want folks looking to me for answers in how to work the game.

The Big Game III Memphis Photos and Results

Well, the Big Game is over and reports from the 25 World Wide locations are trickling in.  At the Memphis Battle Bunker, we had just under 275,000 points, which was the biggest game ever at Memphis.

The Imperial side went first but in the end, Xenos carried the day, winning 38 to 32.  A big thank you to the guys from Siege World, who made the drive and brought 87,000 points themselves!

The Siegeworld Crew

Hornato and his Astral Claws, with attached Warlord Titan

Big Kahuna and his Eldar and Space Wolves

Siegeworld founder Kirk, aka Grand Master Spectre

Don got in the spirit with appropriate head gear

The Rest of the Memphis Gang

The Drew family brought 5 players total!  Kids were well represented in Memphis

The view from Big Kauna's (Patrick) side.  Me in the background behind his Warlock and Phantom Titans, and his custom made Storm Bird

Sean was an awesome player who had his two Reavers and my Leviathan blown up, brought back, and blown up again!  Yet he maintained a great attitude.

The Big Game III - We March for Memphis!

Well, I just arrived in Memphis after a 3 day, 1,800 mile car journey.  That's right, I drove across the USA in order to run The Big Game III at the Games Workshop Memphis Battle Bunker.  This is the North American HQ for GW and has what is now the biggest Games Workshop store in the USA.  My car was packed with 20,000+ points of 40K.  James Bell, former L.A. Battle Bunker manager is now the manager in Memphis and why I agreed to this madness!  The Bunker opens at 11:30 tomorrow and we will start setting up then.

Players are coming from all over the USA, including Michigan - Tom McBride (aka Machinator, of Blood & Skulls Industry), Missouri - Kirk Damann (SiegeWorld) and North Carolina - Matt Plonski (Apoc-Eclipse).

Stay tuned here or to our Facebook group for photos and battle reports!

The Big Game III - The World's Biggest Apocalypse Game

James Bell
The Big Game III will be held on Saturday, March 16th and this year, the home site of The Big Game will be moving from the Los Angeles Games Workshop Battle Bunker to the Memphis TN GW Battle Bunker.  Why the move?  Well, James Bell, the former LA Bunker manager has moved to Memphis, and I thought it would be fun to change things up and follow James to Memphis.

Plus the other two big Apocalypse clubs who help found the Apocalypse40K Forums, Siegeworld from St. Louis, MO and Apoc-Eclipse from Apex, North Carolina are both able to attend the event in Memphis and I think that is huge for the Apocalypse community.

I will be renting an SUV, loading it with everything I own, and driving across the country (which I have wanted to do since seeing "Cars").  The rules have been set and I have asked Matt Plonski of Apoc-Eclipse and Kirk Daman from SiegeWorld to write the scenario.

Set-Up will start on Friday, but you don't need to be there then.  You can set up Saturday am.  Doors open at 8am Saturday and the game starts at 10:00am.  We will finish at 11:00pm and turns will be timed.

SCHEDULE

Friday, March 15th

12:00 noon     Bunker opens (Table Set up, Terrain placement, army displays)

Saturday, March 16th

8:00 am     Set - Up

10:00 am   Game starts

11:00 am   Game Ends

Friday all day players will be arriving, armies will be on display and we will set up tables and terrain.  There will be a Friday night dinner and much drinking (they do a lot of that in the south).  Saturday we ill bring in Pizza for lunch, and have a 90 minute dinner break so we can all go out, socialize and get off our feet for a bit!

As with the previous two years, we will be opening the game up to clubs and stores world-wide.  Each year we have had over 20 locations in 5 different countries, and we want to increase that number this year.

The Memphis Battle Bunker aka "World of Battle"

What does it take to be a location for The Big Game III?  A desire to play with LOTS of models.  The only rules you have to follow are:

1)  Forces of Light vs Forces of Dark

2)  One objective per 10,000 points.

3)  Play four turns.

So if you want to be part of the World's Biggest Apocatle Game, sign on to the Apocalypse 40K forum or email me at alec (at) Propworx (dot) com.

Good Hunting!

The Big Game III and World Records

The Big Game has some BIG surprises in store for 2013.  The third annual Big Game will be held at the Memphis Games Workshop Battle Bunker March 16th, 2013.

Time to start talking World Records again!  So here they are:

These records were initially collected and kept by Siegeworld, the guys who started the mega-apocalypse games.  Siegeworld is a founding member of the Apocalypse40K forums and their records have been recognized by all the major Apocalypse clubs.  These records are kept in a special thread on the Apocalypse40K Forum and reprinted here.

Most Points in a Single Game

This requires all models to participate in a continuous game on one table interconnected or otherwise. All models must be painted (3 colors + based) and the game must last 4+ turns over an unbroken time period (eg-with some breaks, but no "pause and come back the next day").

The Big Game, Los Angeles Battle Bunker, January 22, 2011,   739,247

(The previous record for the Biggest Apocalypse Game was 382,000 by Siegeworld)

Most Points in a Single Battle

Same as Most Points in a Single Game, but models don't need to be painted, and one or more discontinuous tables. Anything goes so long as it is interrelated and simultaneous.  No turn requirements.
The Big Game, Los Angeles Battle Bunker, January 22, 2011,  864,057

(The previous record for the Biggest Apocalypse Battle was 520,000 by GMI games)

Most Points in a Single Battle - Multiple Locations

Same as Most Points in a Single Battle, but allows for multi-location play.

The Big Game, January 22, 2011 22 locations in 5 countries  2,310,835 points

Note that this record has just been added so that record The Big Game set on January 22nd at 22 locations, is distinguished from a single location battle.  Siegeworld agreed that a multiple location event should have a different record from a single location event since it wouldn't be fair for one location to have to compete with multiple locations for a record.  Plus, we all want everyone competing for different records and pushing the limits!

Most Minis in a Single Battle

See Most Points in a Single Battle (single location). Same restrictions apply. This record is anything goes so long as it is interrelated and simultaneous. A miniature is counted as any piece which has its own base or does not use a base. Essentially, if it can be moved on its own (thus a swarm base is a single miniature).

The Big Game, Los Angeles Battle Bunker,  January 22, 2011  18,592

(The previous record for the most minis in a Single Battle was 6,500 by Siegeworld)

Most Tank Models in a Single Battle

Anything with an AV, MCs, and GCs count as one, so long as they're painted. Single battlefield as per the first record and no turn limit.

GW Manchester UK holds the title with 2,562 models.

The Big Game III - March 16th, 2013

The Big Game III date has been announced and it will be Saturday, March 16th, 2013.  More details to follow, but start making plans now!

As with the past two years we will be looking for locations all over the world to join in the World's Biggest Apocalypse Battle!  All you need to do is follow our simple objective scoring rules and your local Apocalypse battle can be part of The Big Game.

So if you want to be part of The Big Game (and why wouldn't you?), just drop me a line at alec (at) propworx (dot) com.

So to start, how about a recap of the World Records, all set in year one of The Big Game.
