Space Hulk is here!

I had heard tell last November of a new PC game within the 40k Universe due to spring up quite soon. Here it is! Space Hulk, or rather a demo of Space Hulk has just shown up at the Game Developers Conference this week. It's still a short ways out, but will soon be available on PC, iPad, and Steam. If you're interested in following its continued development you can check out it's official website here.

You can also see a review of the advance here and an interview with Thomas Lund of Full Control Studios.

The Great FAQ Challenge - Accepted?

Well, it's taken me longer to address than I initially intended, but I think The Great FAQ Challenge was a success. Upon collecting every one's questions and collating them, I came the the realization that nearly all of them were addressed in GW's most recent FAQ. The need to send them in to everyone who might listen was no longer there because they already had. How awesome is that? For the first time in.... a very long time, they've finally been proactive in addressing the community's concerns!

So where do we go from here? While we got the answers we needed, what's our role as a gaming community in getting the information we need in the future? It would seem that having those repositories of questions was a major aid to the designers in addressing what we all really wanted to know. So from here on out, I think it would be wise to hold FAQ threads on popular forums, as before, every four to six months and see what other issues are addressed because of it. What do all of you think?

Forge World New Release - Horus Heresy Outriders

New from Forge World:

Outrider Squadron

Outrider squadrons are mechanised Space Marine reconnaissance squads who take to the field of battle mounted on ruggedly-constructed ground bikes. Equipped with twin-linked bolters, often augmented with heavier firepower in the form of melta-guns, flamers or plasma guns, Outriders are used for rapid encirclement as well as hit-and-run attacks against targets of opportunity behind enemy lines. Their chief advantage is speed and mobility, their bikes enabling them to cover ground far faster than infantry, and to go where heavier vehicles cannot.
The Legion MkIV Outrider Squadron contains three complete resin and plastic kits, allowing this potent Fast Attack option to be added to a Space Marine Legion force or fielded as a Bike Squadron in many Codex armies. Each model has two weapon options: twin-linked bolters, or plasma guns and they are fully compatible with our range of Space Marine and Legion accessories.

These models are available to pre-order now and will be despatched from the 5th of April. Models designed by Phil Stutcinskas.

 A squad of 3 costs 60 GBP or about $ 90.

Necron Realm of Battle Tomb Complex

This online exclusive bundle comprises four of Blake Spence’s Necron Tomb Citadel Tiles and four plastic Necron Monoliths. This creates a 4’ by 4’ (122cm by 122cm) playing area, which can extend a standard Realm of Battle gaming table. The Necron Tomb Complex bundle is exclusively available online, and can be pre-ordered now for despatch from Friday 5th April.

 Legion Rotor Cannon Set
Resin upgrade set containing five Rotor cannons and ammunition packs and one optional scanner unit. To build a Legion Tactical Support Squad using the rules in Betrayal, combine these weapon sets with our MkII, MkIII or MkIV Space Marine armour sets or our MkII, MkIII or MkIV Legion armour sets.

There are also Melta, Plasma and Flamer sets.

Check out all the new releases here.

New Black Library Horus Heresy Releases

Here is what is new from The Black Library in the Horus Heresy series:

The Gates of Terra by Nick Kyme

As the Heresy spreads across the galaxy and confusion reigns, only one thing is certain: Horus and his traitor Legions will eventually strike at Terra. But he will not find it unguarded - the Ardent Reef, an encircling ring of gun bastions and asteroid bases, is but one amongst many such lines of defence. Captain Arcadese of the Ultramarines finds himself in command of a host of his battle-brothers, as the renegade Warmaster's fleet launches its final assault on the Throneworld. Will he hold the line even in the face of almost certain death, or will his own loyalty waver in those final moments?

Dark Heart by Anthony Reynolds

When the Word Bearers launched their surprise assault on Calth, it marked the beginning of their righteous campaign of vengeance against the hated Ultramarines Legion. But for one young acolyte of Kor Phaeron, it is not the sons of Guilliman that he seeks to bring low - through infernal pacts and daemonic power he strives to carve out a destiny for himself in the midst of the greatest war that the galaxy has ever seen. The name of Marduk shall be spoken with awe for millennia still to come...

A brand new Horus Heresy short story by Anthony Reynolds. This short story will appear in the forthcoming Mark of Calth anthology.

The Sigillite by Chris Wright

The galaxy is divided, but while his armies prepare for battle the Emperor himself remains curiously absent. In his place stands Malcador – legendary Sigillite, First Lord of Terra and regent to the throne – now arguably the single most powerful man in the Imperium. Army officer Khalid Hassan reports back to the Palace after a disastrous secret mission into the wastelands of Gyptus, but soon learns an awful truth about the destiny of mankind. Where do Malcador’s true loyalties lie?

I am a huge fan of the Horus Heresy and these really are the best fiction The Black Library puts out!

Spikey Bits Releases Statement on GW Policy Change

Rob Baer of FTW Games/Spikey Bits released a statement on his blog about the new GW Policy regarding online sales and bits.  If you don't know Rob, he started the bits business a 8 years ago, sold his business to The War Store, and then opened his own shop in Virginia 3 years ago, which I happened to visit this week.  Rob is one of the real good guys in the hobby and I have enormous respect for him.

From Rob:

In light of recent events that I am sure many of you are aware of, we have been fielding a ton of questions about the future of Spikey Bits, and our position on the matter in question.

Well our official position is that,we have no official position.  Nothing has been presented to us by any of our distributors as to any policies they will be enforcing on us now, or in the future.

That being said it would be very ignorant of us to just keep skipping along merrily and not preparing for any eventualities that may arise in the not so distant future.  So rest assured that we are taking all measures possible to prepare for any changes that will be enacted upon us by threat of force, because let's be honest that's really what it is when you boil it down.

I invented the bits industry eight years ago, and in that time many businesses have come and gone.  Currently Spikey Bits is the Mail Order side to FTW Games, a very successful gaming store in Richmond Virginia.

So you can rest assured that whatever changes may be on the way, that we are vested in both our local and online communities deeply, and will continue to endevour to provide all the same service and products to everyone as best we can.

My name is Robert Baer. I am a survivor living in Richmond, Virginia. I will be broadcasting on all media frequencies. I will be at FTW Games everyday. We open at mid-day, when the sun is highest in the sky. If you are out there... if you want to game... I can provide tables, I can provide products, I can provide supplies. If there's anybody out there... anybody... please. You are not alone.

GW Policy Eliminates Web and Bits Sales

If you haven't heard by now, Games Workshop is eliminating ANY online sales by any retailer outside of itself in the US and Canada. This basically will force every online discounter out of business.  Those that have a brick and mortar store (like the War Store, or my favorite, Spikey Bits), will survive, but being just an online retailer is a thing of the past (starting June 15th at least when the GW policy goes into effect).

Now, while I think GW corporate policies are generally full of crap (especially only letting retailers sell certain product, or lower discounts for some products), and I think they are squeezing us gamers for every last dime with ridiculous price increases that made some products like Land Raiders 50% more expensive in just two years, I happen to be HAPPY that there will be no more online discounting.

Why?  Well, it basically hurts the hobby.  Sorry, I know people will yell and scream, but your FLGS cannot survive when your knucklehead gaming buddy buys his stuff online at 20% off and then goes and uses it in a FLGS.  Sure, most of us responsible gamers always buy our stuff in the FLGS we game in.  But some don't.  And it is a constant struggle educating these neanderthals.

I also know the very valid argument that mail order helps those gamers who aren't near a FLGS.  And I agree with that too.  So now they will have to pay full price like the rest of us.  Yeah, it will suck to not get the benefit of gaming tables like those of us near a great FLGS, but that is what you get for living in Saskatchewan or wherever!

Now the part about not allowing bit sales is typical GW bullshit and why so many people hate GW.  They don't give a shit about the hobbyist any farther than where it helps their bottom line.  And bits is GOOD for their business.   Why they would want to supress that I have no idea.  Good news is that this won't affect most bits companies who aren't buying direct.  The prices may go up as they have to buy retail now, but I don't expect to see bits disappearing.

OK, so without going into this too much, let me just repost this AWESOME video by the guys at Miniwargaming, an online discounter.  I agree with everything he says here and he does a great job of telling it like it is.  I highly recommend you watch this.

And stay tuned for more news on GW policies and new developments in the gaming industry.
