Horus Heresy - The Primarchs

The Black Library has released The Primarchs, a collection of four short stories that focus on Fulgrim, Lion El'Johnson, Ferrus Manus, and Alpharius and Omegon.  I was lucky to pick this book up at Adepticon and dove right in.  So far I can say the Lion and Fulgrim stories are pretty damn good!

From The Black Library:

The story

Created in the Emperor’s own image, the primarchs had long thought themselves to be princes of the universe and masters of their own destiny – they led the Space Marine Legions in glorious conquest of the galaxy, and no enemy of the Imperium could stand against them. However, even amongst this legendary brotherhood, the seeds of dissent had been sown long before the treacherous Warmaster Horus declared his grand heresy.

About the book

Gathered within this anthology are four novellas focusing on some of the mightiest warriors and leaders that mankind has ever known – Fulgrim, Lion El’Jonson, Ferrus Manus and the twin Primarchs Alpharius and Omegon – and the roles that they may have yet to play in a war which threatens to change the face of the Imperium forever.

More Dark Angels Rumors...

Well, more rumors from Warseer.  This time from a new rumor poster named MarikLaw:

Please take these rumours with a grain of salt, never met the guy who told me this stuff before in my life but he seemed to be pretty confident about what he saw (or heard). I work in a gaming store so I tend to hear rumours all over the place, bought a 50/50 chance that any of them are ever true.
  • Dark Angels will NOT be released prior to 6th Edition. Expect them after Chaos Legions, sometime this Fall (apparently Chaos Legions is being released shortly after or in tandem with 6th Edition). I believe the credibility of this (at least as far as the Dark Angels go) is pretty good, especially if we speculate on when the White Dwarf spine image of the Dark Angel is going to finish.
  • Company Masters in Terminator armour will apparently be able to take a single Deathwing Terminator squad as Troops and a Company Master riding a bike will be able to take a single Ravenwing Attack squadron as Troops. Belial will let you take any number of Deathwing Terminator squads as Troops and Sammael will allow you to take any number of Ravenwing Attack squadrons as Troops. I'd rather see both units as Troops choices right off the bat, but if the recent Chaos Legions rumours are true than this seems all too likely to happen as well.
  • Dark Angels will have Mortis Dreadnoughts as Heavy Support choices. Sounds like wishlisting to me, but would be nice if it was true.
  • Person seemed to confirm some of the other rumours that have been floating around about Chaplains, nothing new or interesting to report from that though.
  • Cypher will NOT be in the Dark Angels book, but will instead appear in the Chaos Legions book.
  • Some sort of new Predator that has a plasma weapon as its main armament. Sounds like wishlisting again, but could still be cool if true.
  • He also seemed to confirm that the Dark Angels would have an affinity for plasma weapons and that they would be slightly better than in other Marine books, but wouldn't say how. Sounds like rumour rehashing, but if not it could confirm some of the other rumours that have been floating around.

As always, take with a helping of this:

Forgeworld Warlord Titan?

For a while there have been rumors, mostly speculation, but some insiders, who said that Forgeworld is making a Warlord Titan.  Sure, it makes sense in that they did a Warhound, and then a Reaver.  But a Warlord is a BIG model.  Figure 50% bigger than a Reaver.  And how many would they sell?  How many people play games where you can use it? It would certainly cost around $ 1,500.

Well, the fact is, after my talks with two different members of the Forgeworld team at Adepticon, they actually would LIKE to make a Warlord.  However, they have no plans for doing so.  At Forgeworld there is a list of projects that are in some stage of working on, even if it is just concept design and the Warlord is NOT on that list.

Forgeworld would like Will Hayes, who has created every Titan Forgeworld has made (The Warhounds, Reavers, Eldar Revenant and Phantom), to make the Warlord.  The problem is that the Warlord will take 18 months to complete and WIll is one of the best designers in the studio.  To lose him that long would severely hurt Forgeworld's ability to release other models.  And ultimately there is a financial analysis that sees that as not very wise.

So keep hoping, and in the mean time, do what I did, and buy a Warlord!  (Check out the Apocalypse40K forum).

Chapterhouse Studios Pre-Heresy Terminator Shoulder Pads

I am a big fan of Chapterhouse Studios.  It wasn't always that way.  While I think Nick & Co. are great guys and passionate providers of gaming products, their early products, specifically shoulder pads, were kind of weak.  They just looked amateurish.  Well, that has all changed.  Chapterhouse has been knocking it out of the park lately with their Stormraven conversion, Land Raider Conversion, Weapons Turrets and more.

Now they are releasing a series of different shoulder pads to represent pre-heresy Terminator shoulder pads.  They all are pretty cool, but I would rather see them on the new Forgeworld Tartaros Pattern Terminators, since they represent an earlier mark.  They don't look quite right on the new Terminators.  Still, very cool looking.

Heresy Era Pad for Terminators Type A

Heresy Era Pad for Terminators Type C

Heresy Era Pads for Terminators Type D

Heresy Era Pad for Terminators Type B

Heresy Era Pads for Terminators Type E

From Nick at Chapterhouse:

Five new shoulder pad options have just been added to the store. The pads are tailored to fit on Space Marine Terminators and are modeled after the earlier style that was present during the Heresy Civil war.

Each set comes with 2 matching pads and they are available for $2.00 a set - components come as unpainted pewter. These have been specially designed to fit on the shoulders of terminator models with nothing but superglue, no modifications are necessary.

We will continue to add a few more Heresy Era pad choices in the coming weeks as well as some new sculpts for our TRU-Scale Knights Praetorian line. My next newsletter will be showcasing the "Assault" version of our Javelin Imperial Jetbike and notify you all of its release.

I look forward to everything that comes out of Chapterhouse.

Forgeworld Releases Model Masterclass Volume II

Well, it is finally here!  Forgeworld's successor volume to Imperial Armour Model Masterclass is here and it promises to be another must have volume for us hobbyists:

From Forgeworld:
Since Model Masterclass Volume One was published several years ago, the painting and modelling landscape has moved forward considerably, with an explosion of new models, paints and materials available, not least of all from Forge World itself. In Model Masterclass Volume Two, the talented painters and modellers of the Forge World design studio build on the first volume with more informative articles, stage-by-stage guides and lavish galleries of inspirational models, such as the Imperial and Chaos Reaver Titans, Great Brass Scorpion and Valdor Tank Hunter.

Inside you’ll find step-by-step painting and modelling articles for our resin kits including the Crassus Armoured Assault Transport and the Great Brass Scorpion by Mark Bedford, as well as a Red Scorpions Land Raider Proteus and the Chaos Reaver Titan by Phil Stutcinskas. There are guides on the building and painting of the stunning display boards, ‘Encounter at the Balmaeus Ice Mines’, built to showcase Imperial Armour Volume 11: The Doom of Mymeara, and the ‘Raid on Kastorel-Novem’, built for Imperial Armour Volume 8. Also included are detailed painting galleries of some of our most iconic resin kits, including the Vulture Gunship by Phil Stutcinskas, a Renegade version of the Minotaur Artillery Tank by Paul Rudge and Keith Robertson’s beautifully painted Saim-Hann Phantom Titan bust.

Whether you’re building and painting a centrepiece model for your army or a detailed diorama for display, Imperial Armour Model Masterclass Volume Two is packed with innovative techniques to help you create stunning models and is an essential reference for any serious painter.

The volume is roughly $ 42 US.  A good deal in my book.  You can order yours on the Forgeworld site.

Chaos Codex Contents Rumors Hit the Street!

Well, Chaos seems to be all the rage these days and here are the latest rumors from the grand pubah of the rumor mill.

From TastyTaste on Blood of Kittens:

It is about time we get some information on the new Chaos Space Marine codex. Before we get right into let us start out with some ground rules.

The Chaos Space Marine codex is the only 40k codex for this year. It is not going to be divided into two codexes or anything special. This is not the return 3.5 codex everyone has been wanting this is more a clean up than anything else.
With that said let us get started.
  • Troops choices will be Chaos Space Marines and Cultists
  • All Cult Marines are Elites
  • No new Special Characters
  • Special Characters will unlock Cult Marines as troops (Kharn for Berserkers and so on)
  • Typhus makes Cultists into Zombies
  • Chaos Dreadnaught is removed and replaced with a new unit (like how pariahs were replaced with Lychguard)
  • CSM now get a Flyer a Mechanical Chaos Dragon (model is done will be part of initial release)
  • Lesser and Greater Demons are gone
  • Spawn replaced by “Fell Beast”
I feel like I am missing something…

Rules for Traitor Guard are in!

So there you are.  I have to say I am excited for this release even though I don't play Chaos.  A lot of my friends do and while they are pretty good and don't whine, there are lots of Chaos players who keep telling me how bad Chaos is!  I don't think so, as they make a very impressive showing in Apocalypse, but I am glad they will get their day.

Now what about that other Chaos codex...Dark Angels!!!  :-)

40K Release Schedule - Only ONE New Codex!

TastyTaste from Blood of Kittens posted this rumor blockbuster:

40k players will only get one codex this year and that is Chaos Space Marines– along with 6th edition of course.
So the time-table has changed and looks like this:

June-July 6th Edition

Sept-Oct Chaos Space Marines

Sprinkle in some flyers, buildings, and that is all you will see from the 40k front for the year.

The whole post is here:

So that means no Dark Angels and no Tau.  StickMonkey, another well known and reliable rumor poster, agrees with this assessment.  So that is not good news for 40K players.  Especially those of us who love the Angels of Caliban.

What is surprising is that if the Dark Angels are indeed in the new boxed set, that there is no corresponding codex release.  That really makes no sense.  We shall see.

Adepticon Best Army - Jim Wappel

Jim Wappel is one of the truly nice guys in the game and one of its most talented painters.  My girlfriend and I had a blast two years ago attending his basing class at Adepticon and you can see he knows his stuff by his AMAZING bases on his army.  His Grey Knight army is without doubt, the best army I have seen in my 3 years attending Adepticon.  Here are some photos for your enjoyment.
