Well, there goes Lysander, the corrupt and cheapened character that was once awesome, down the drain. Oh joy.
Luke... The book isn't even out yet, it's a bit early to throw your hands up in surrender. The whole pacts/bargains to escape thing is an established part of his fluff.
Erm... No. It has never before been part of the fluff that Lysander made pacts with the Dark Gods to get off Maldorax.
Also, it may be a bit early, but someone has already read the book and I don't like what has come up in the conversation (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282758-malodrax-an-imperial-fist-novel/). Also, having read some of Ben Counter's other atrocities, I am not keeping my hopes up in any way and wouldn't be surprised at how rubbish the book is.
Lysander (in the now-old fluff) fought his way off Maldorax and survived through sheer power of will, not because he succumbed to the whispers of Chaos. Also, he went through 6 months of stringent testing back home on the Phalanx after his return, I highly doubt that they would miss the fact that he made a pact with one of the Dark Gods...
Holy crap, Luke! Thanks for the link. I'm purging this book from my list immediately.
What's particularly perplexing is if they wanted Fists to be darker, why not return to their addiction to pain? I always loved Ian Watson's fluff for them. Have the IW confused as to why he's GETTING OFF on their torture. Him making deals with Chaos is antithetical to everything the character has been and everything his faction represents.
