Seminar # 1 - The History of the Horus Heresy




The History of the Horus Heresy - A panel with Graham McNeil, Alan Bligh, Dan Abnett and Alan Merrett.
The seminar focused on how the Horus Heresy story was developed and how it really was quite by accident that even got started.

Chapter approved early 1988

Alan Merritt told how the first mention of the Horus Heresy happened because the Chapter Approved book because they needed to fill a spot on the page.  So they wrote something up qucik as it was easier and quicker than getting an artist to draw more art.

October 1988 Realm of Chaos

Late in the process of writing it was suggested to put some 40,000 in it and it was felt that the traitor legions could be tied to Chaos.

White Dwarf October 1988

Adepticus Titanicus Article describes the Legions at war in the game to be released.

December 1988 - Adepticus Titanicus

Set in the 31st millennium.  GW could only afford one set of Titan molds so it was decided to make a civil war and one set of titans was made in blue and one in red.

August 1989 - Space Marine. 

Set in the Horus Heresy - First time Dark Angels were shown as green, though they were meant to be black with green highlights.

May 1993 - Horus Heresy Board Game

Jervis Johnson.  First time the final battle of Terra is described.

2002-2004. Index Asartes 

The history of the Space Marines

November 2003 - The Horus Heresy Collectible Card Game

Sabertooth needed references for the story, and so Alan Merritt had to fill out the story.

2004-2006 Visions of Heresy & The Collected Visions

The story gets fleshed out and told beginning to end in these four volumes, using the artwork of the card game.  The Collected Visions brings all four volumes together.

The relationship between each Legion and good vs evil is not quite as simple as you think.

The Crusade is a long and glorious event and humanity derails itself.  This is not the 5 minutes to midnight world of 40k, it is what sets that up.
