Mantic Games has released Battlezones, a new modular terrain.
Made originally for their Deadzone Kickstarter, the new terrain has finally hit the general public and looks fantastic. And it costs about half of what a similar Games Workshop item will cost you. Basiclaly, reasonably priced as opposed to the over-priced GW versions.
Battlezones can be bought on the Mantic website.
I am in for some!

GW lawsuit in 3... 2... 1...
ReplyDeleteIts not really much like any of GWs terrain, its very "classic sci fi" style and its very unique in its assembly. I got 3 battle zones worth from the kickstarter, the only thing I'd say is that if you want to make complete buildings, with walls on each side and a roof, it doesn't go that far, the 3 battle zones i have densly cover a 2x2 foot table for deadzone
ReplyDeleteNice! Now if they can only get a Null Barrier Base Station to market...
ReplyDeleteI think i'd fall over in shock if Mantic ever made an original product.
ReplyDeleteAnd that landing platform is going to get them in trouble.
yup cos everyone knows GW invented the concept of the landing pad. Seriously how dumb are you people
ReplyDeleteSorry your right mrlutharr, that landing pad isnt exactly the same dimensions, shape and style of crennelations as the games workshop skyshield landing platform. It doesn't even have the unfolding ramps on each edge to signify the platform shield...
ReplyDeleteOh wait...
Maybe I am out of touch here, but this terrain looks terrible me. Do people really like it or just like the price?
ReplyDeleteI went in on the kick starter and have the core worlds, landing pad, and fortifications sets and I have mixed feelings about the deadzone terrain.
ReplyDeleteThe quality of the plastic is good; it isn't specific to any game or setting; and the tiles themselves are rugged . But there are large compromises made in the designs. If you glue them together there is a lot of gap filling to do and the buildings often look unnaturally cluncky. If you don't glue them together so you can build and rebuild what ever you want lego style , then the connectors are really fragile; you'll never have enough connectors; and there will be horrible gaps (especially at the base of walls) that Mantic goes to great length to hide in the product photos.
Thank You Mr Millar and Yaleling for posting something useful about the product. I appreciate it. To all you other idiots acting as lawyer prophets, find another life. Despite your wildest fantasy involving GW personally rewarding you for heroically defending them, you're not contributing. You're not being clever, so unless you actually have experience in copyright law, I suggest you spend your time in the basement doing something useful. At the very least a visual comparison between X and Y is an example of being useful. If this rant gets even one of you to pause before posting and wasting everyone's time with your amateur legal predictions, I've contributed as well.
ReplyDeleteSo... pro's and cons of both products are.
ReplyDeleteGW Pro's: Superb detail, easy to build, can be built in different shapes and sizes, awesome iconography everywhere, playable in army lists, usable at home, at FLGS, at GW stores.
GW Con's: Price, must be glued (non modular).
Mantic's Pro's: Plastic (not paper), Modular, Cost, okay detail.
Mantic's Cons: Poor modular clips, large gaps, resembles the GW design too much, legs look flimsy, I'm gonna say cost as well.
19.99 pounds in US is 33.14...
Now... here's the thing, if the Skyshield Landing pad is around that price, maybe a few dollars more... so are the rest of the kits...
I'd rather pay the 8 dollars more to get better quality detail and craftsmanship, and not have to muck around with gap filling, of all the pro's and con's, I'd say the Pro that really stands out for Mantic is the Modular ability to change the buildings, but with weak modular clips... that's a negative ghostrider.
