New White Dwarf Pictures, Info

The new White Dwarf replacements have been announced.

Nothing surprising, but details are here.

From Games Workshop:

Introducing two new magazines from the White Dwarf team!

White Dwarf, now weekly.

Available exclusively through Games Workshop stores, independent retailers, and games-workshop.com. White Dwarf is an exciting and essential weekly hobby magazine that contains something for every hobbyist, every week - guaranteed!

- 36 pages of everything that is exciting and new in the hobby this week.

- Detailed information on all the week’s other new releases, and the latest hobby news.

- New features, new modelling and painting techniques, new rules, new columnists and much more.

- All this every week for the same price as a single Citadel pot of paint!

Issue No.1 launches Saturday 1st February and subsequent issues follow every Saturday.

Warhammer: Visions, now monthly.

Experience a visual feast of super high-quality Citadel Miniatures. In more than 230 pages you’ll find a completely new take on the worlds of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 in a stunning new extended pictorial style.

- Contains all your favourite sections from Army of the Month and Blanchitsu, to Kit Bash and Paint Splatter.

- Over 70 more pages than the previous monthly White Dwarf with more Golden Demon and Armies on Parade photos and more fantastic photographs of Citadel miniatures than ever before.

And it’s wrapped up in a fabulous new format that you will want to keep and collect!

Issue No.1 out Saturday 1st February.

I personally think the weekly will tank.  No one wants to buy a weekly publication telling you what you can buy that week.  Especially with everyone blogging it.

The monthly looks to be a very interesting and I am in.

  2. I really dont understand why they don't just go the FW model: release a book and then continuously release models. For a "model" company they really seem to be obsessed with trying to make an antiquated business model (magazines you have to buy at a GW store) work. Just release models and then have an associated PDF or dataslate. It makes me wonder if there's someone *cough Jervis cough* who insists that no matter that it's 2014 they MUST have White Dwarf.

  3. In answer to the above question: a pdf or dataslate wouldn't require customers to visit their local GW every week. The magazine has gone weekly to require exactly that - instead of a single monthly visit to a newsagent.

  4. That's the thing though. The weekly is GW's response to models being shown before they are ready to release them. They're basically responding to the blogs getting the word out before they are and are monetising it.

While that's laudable, it's a daft exercise in printing and paper when they could simply publish on a website but seen as they're looking to make money from even the marketing the obvious solution is just not to buy it.

On the upside, instead of waiting a month with grainy photos from a phone camera we'll get high definition pics weekly. Then if that edition interests you, buy that one.

  5. Here's a crazy idea...how about sending models to the store for painting 2 weeks before release. If you want to see them in person you can travel to the store to watch the manager paint the dang things. Then release the rules in the $4 magazine 2 weeks after they've arrived at the store with the buyable product. THEN...every six months release a rules compendium with photos and the like in hardcover and iBook for all of the releases for the last six months. I will drive to a store to see them and talk to someone about painting them...sigh...

  6. They used to do that with the black boxes. The store would get the models a month ahead of time to build and paint to have on display in order to generate hype. A fun/generous store manager would generally let the store's best painter paint the models to be displayed in the store. It not only created excitement, it let the store's champion painter do something for the community. After a month of it being on display the manager generally gave the model to the person who painted it.

I was the painter for my GW shop until they canceled the black box program due to 'leaks'. It was really disappointing as it had a tangible effect on the store's sales and pre-orders when they could actually see, feel, and play with the model in the store ahead of the release.
