Space Marine New Releases

Well, in case you have been living under a rock, all the Space Marine new releases are up on Games Workshop's website now.
And it is a good release, though pricey as one would expect.  But us Space Marine players get two good new units as well as some updates.

Reclusiam Command Squad $ 90

Has a unique Chaplain that FOR NOW, is not available separately.

Space Marine Centurion Squad $ 78

Makes both Devastator and Assault variants.

Space Marine Stalker /Hunter $ 65

Reliable AA.  I want 6.

Space Marine Captain $30

One tiny injection molded sprue for $ 30?  You can't change its position or modify other than a head swap?

Space Marine Librarian $30

Same deal.  One sprue, no mods possible.

Also, there are new versions of:

Vanguard Veterans $ 40

Sternguard Veterans $ 50

Tactical Squad $ 40.

Plus there is a one click bundle (see photo above) and the ability to buy the Black Templar Lastrati Crusade.

Find it all on the Games Workshop website here.

  2. Its funny; when I was finally able to get on the GW website, half of the limited release versions of the Space Marine codex were no longer available!

Paying that much extra for a dust jacket is insane, when you can buy Forge World's first Horus Heresy book, cheaper!

  3. I actually like the plastic HQ kits. I converted the Chaos Aspiring Champion with very little effort and he was the same kind of clam pack. The poses are a bit static, but that seems to be the new aesthetic for GW. Overall I like everything but the centurions - they are still fugly.

  4. So 30 USD for one model with no bits. 40 USD for five models with tons of bits. Makes perfect sense.

  5. Have to agree. $ 30 for that tiny sprue is just a rip off. Look at any other plastic model company and what you get for $ 30.

Then look at GW itself and see what you get, as you say Eneny, for $ 40 and it makes NO Sense.

We aren't paying for relative value, we are paying what GW thinks they can get us for.

Another reason I love Forge World.

  6. It is more than what they think they can charge. The ROI on the Space Marine Captain is much less than on a Tactical squad box so they have to charge more to make up their cost. They still add a GW tax I'm sure but the reason the prices are so close probably has more to do with their cost to produce plastic models than some thought that you value the captain model more than the tactical squad.

  7. @GP

The mold for the Character minis would only cost about $5K each. $10K tops. Even if they only sell 1000 of them, that's just $5-10 of mold cost per copy. Plus the $.02 of plastic injected into it to make the sprue.

The rest is the GW "I think they'll pay it." tax.

  8. Don't forget packaging, shipping, marketing, labor, payroll healthcare, and a myriad of other costs that go into any product. Your math is drastically over simplified.
My point however was that assuming you are right that it costs $10k for the Captains model and they expect to sell 1,000, the mold for a Tactical squad would cost something near $30k(3x as many sprues. I would imagine that they expect to sell something like 8,000 to 10,000 units of Tactical marines. Ergo the amount you would have to charge for the Captain is more to recoup your investment than for the Tactical squad. And then on top of that I am sure you pay the GW "tax" which i imagine is something like $10 for both of those units.

  9. Just going to do a little advertising here....
Material costs run about 25 cents per model.
    Also shapeways.com can be used.
