New Space Marine Releases for Apocalypse

New Space Marines models are coming out with Apocalypse next month.

Four new "Masters" are being released during the July Apocalypse release.  They are Finecast Resin, and no word if they are being sold individually or as a unit (as the previous set is sold).

Full photos are here.

Lord Executioner  - Commander of the Assault Companies

The Master of Relics  -   Commander of the Devastator Company and an expert at long range engagements.

Master of Marches  -   In charge of deployment of the chapter's marines as well as leading the company into battle.

Master of Rites  -   In charge of the Chapter records and the traditions of the Chapter

So four new Masters of the Chapter, and certainly special rules in the new Apocalypse rulebook coming out next month.

  1. Urgh, Finecast... Don't care what the releases are if they're going to be in that crappy material. Sorry GW, not this time! :0(

  2. @Gilbear

Can't say I agree with you on this point to be honest.
I personally have bought many models over the last 25 or so years and have had no more problems with finecast than I have with FW's resin (mainly air bubbles and out of line casts, all resolved brilliantly with great customer service I might add) and due to its nature it's more detailed and easier to work with than: plastic (finer detail), metal (much more difficult to convert or change and very heavy) and FW's resin (due to the prep work required, release agents and so on). The only area it really falls down on for me (apart from the occasional miscasts/ air bubbles that affect all resin casts and can be returned/ replaced at no cost) is how fine elements such as staffs, aerials etc can be very brittle and break easily but it seems no material is without it's faults.

  3. Dont mind the finecast. Been playing since 89 and finecast for me is superior to metal. I find most people that hate it are just those that jump on the "i hate finecast cause..." wagon, without a genuine opinion or knowledge of the subject. Im loking forward to the finecast masters of the chapter as a gamer and collector. I agree that a helmet will look better and with it being finecast I can easily cut and shape it for a new head. If its miscast i return it for a new one...no biggie...its not like I need it now like a new heart or kidney :)

  4. In regards to bubbles that liquid green stuff is great for filling. Since im usually using it to hide connection points or if i get heavy handed with an xacto. Im really hoping this masters of the chapter will have an option of" take this master and get these bonuses to your company."

  5. Thanks Father Game, nice of you to label me an ignorant "hater"... =0/

No, the real reason that I don't like Finecast is because the models/sculpts are so clearly *not* designed for the medium that they are cast in.

The Finecast resin is really thin when it's poured into the mould, and then has minimal shrinkage when it cures. This allows it to capture and retain more of the very fine detail compared to metal.

However, it is also super-prone to bubbles when the mould is spun, not very strong and frequently arrives in the customers hands with a considerably higher amount of defects than their metal predecessors ever did.

If the new models/sculpts were designed with Finecast in mind, the models would be cut into different (and more) pieces and have different details aimed are reducing or entirely eliminating the opportunity for bubbles. The model sculpts would also consider details like spears, swords or banner poles, and have poses or additional sculpted detail to reduce the chance of them miscasting or producing and unreasonably weak detail.

But this is *not* what GW does, and they carry on ignorantly sculpting the kind of detail that encourages the formation of trouble spots and miscast details on their models (fore example; small rivets and chain details near the edges of an armour panel, fiddly sword hilt designs that trap bubbles and prevent the sword from properly filling, long flowing details like parchment streamers that miscast more often than not).

The problem is that if GW want to keep the material, then they need to sculpt and mould in such a way that allows the material to work *for* them. Otherwise, they need to find a better material for what they want to do if they intend to keep going as they are.

By comparison, their new plastics are amazing (the two current WHFB and 40k Stater boxes especially).

What I want to know is what they keep using the crappy resin production instead of producing a plastic frame with all the non-names characters an army would need on it. For example, a frame that contains single Chaplain, Librarian and Commander sprues on it, or one that has single Techmarine, Apothecary and Standard Bearer sprues in it. The frame could either be sold as a box, or broken up into individual sprues and sold individually. That would 100% eliminate the need for most Finecast models at a stroke, and would motivate a lot of purchases.
