Hi, Grey Area here from the Heresy30k forums. I've decided to start a blog about the Heresy era Blood Angels army I'm building.
First off a quick look at how the army started.
Since
reading a short story about the siege of Terra in White Dwarf in the
early 90s I've wanted to paint a Blood Angels force to represent the
loyalist defenders. When Forge World released the Space Marine Legion rules in
Betrayal I decided it was finally a good tme to start.
I should probably admit I'm not a
fan of the way Blood Angels look in 40k (I find them a bit too bright
and I think the different coloured helmets look a bit odd) so I decided
to go for something a bit darker and
dirtier that fitted with my vision of the Heresy. After a few test
models I
came up with a paint scheme I liked.
I used paints from the Vallejo Model Air range because the colours are
quite muted compared to GW colours and this suited the style I was going
for. Plenty of paint chipping and some dirty ankles (courtesy of pigments) completed the look.
I tested the colours out on a Jetbike too so I could see how they looked on bigger models.

When it came to choosing what units to start the army with I decided to get the main troops choices out of the way first before moving on to the more interesting things.
The first full unit to be painted was a 20 man blob squad of Tactical marines.

Following on from the Tactical squad came the first ten assault marines. A must have unit in a fluffy Blood Angels force, but unfortunately they are pretty much just cannon fodder in 30k.

In
the next couple of blog entries I'll go through the rest of the units
that I've completed, before catching up with what I'm working on at
present (tanks mostly). Leave a comment or contact me on the Heresy 30k Forum if there is anything you want me to go into more detail with and I'll do my best to oblige.

Wow! I love that nitty gritty weathering. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteReally nice! I have my Fleshtearers force (40K) done in similar colors, but not nearly so nicely I think...
ReplyDeleteI love the gritty style. I paint mine to be rather shiny and new, but I love your weathered look.
ReplyDeleteVery cool and great paint job! As a fellow BA player I am jealous. Great looking stuff.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your progress posts
ReplyDeleteThis is great. Very gritty, loving that red as well! Very muted but still easy to identify them as angels.
ReplyDeleteI really the colour you've achieved which model reds did you use? Over a base coat of black I've been using a game air burnt umber base followed by a scarlet red highlight. It looks good but it seems to missing that deep red color which you've achieved. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments guys :)
ReplyDelete@judgingjester - I use a black basecoat, then Model Air Burnt Umber, then Model Air Fire Red sprayed down at an angle, then highlights of Model Colour Orange Red. It can take few coats of Fire Red to look right. Also bear in mind the photos I've taken are under bright lights that bring out the colours a lot.
