I have many passions. 40K and Apocalypse and the Horus Heresy in particular is a big one. I collect comics and have the third ranked silver age Captain America collection in the country, all graded CGC 9.6 or higher. I also have a big collection of screen used Star Trek props and costumes (I even recently bought the full sized Galileo Shuttlecraft set with a friend and we are restoring it to donate to a museum). So I am a huge geek and proud of it. And one of my most important collections is my book collection. It isn't huge, but I have first editions of most of my favorite books, including a pristine first edition of the limited "Horus Rising" hardcover from 5 years ago.
I
have been buying the limited edition Horus Heresy books and so when The
Black Library decided to release all the Horus Heresy books in
hardcover over time, I was excited to add them to my collection. Then I
got the first four editions.
The books were merely thrown in a cardboard box with no packing materials other than a single inflatable spacer. They were bouncing about in the box all the way from England and of course the dust jackets were ruined. Now, if you are going to sell hard cover books for collectors, you better get used to the idea that we all want our books in excellent condition. We don't want books that look like they have been in a used book store for 20 years.
And Black Library knows how to do this as they do a great job with their limited edition books, which are shrink wrapped and packed in purpose-built boxes.
So I contacted The Black Library and I got a nice email from Black Library customer service saying they appreciated my photos and were addressing the problem. They were going to ship out new books as well. Stay tuned for updates.
Does anyone buy the hardcovers that doesn't actually care about the condition of the dust jacket?

I hate the fact that I now have to wait months to get the pocket paperback of the new books, I'm not giving them more then 10 bucks for this and the average B&W drawings don't justify ditching an extra 15 bucks.
ReplyDeleteTotally agreed. Not happy about this.
ReplyDeleteI actually had a hardback copy of a Montreal Canadiens book signed by Guy Lefleur on the dust jacket, stupidly lent it to my dads mate, came back and the signature had been rubbed off due to wear. Take care of the dust jackets people!!
ReplyDeleteHappened to me too, they replaced the book quite quickly but I have some more books coming in soon (The Scripts, Betrayer, Flight of the Eiseinstein) in hardcover and I'm worried the same thing will happen again.
ReplyDeleteFirst off I am totally jealous of your geeky collections but in the most positive sense of the word (so perhaps admiration is a better word?). Thankfully this hasnt happened to me yet but i think you are totally correct and did the right thing. Hopefully this really will lead them to reasses theor packaging and save others this disappointment.
ReplyDeleteomg can you post pictures of your Captain America collection Im kind of a Captain America junky myself
ReplyDeleteI don't have photographs of my collection, since I would just be taking pictures of covers of Captain America comics and those are available anywhere. But I have photos of my Cap sketches by famous artists on my Facebook page. alecpeters
